about

Rhizomes; horizontal plant shoots, emerging elsewhere as new lateral stems.

Other things also have a way of cropping up elsewhere and in different times.

I have childhood memories of my father’s opera singing; a classic lead tenor.

Recently, when clearing the attic, I discovered a stack of home recorded cassettes containing recordings of my father in rehearsals, recitals and concerts.

I have edited and collaged short sections of these recordings and used them as the basis for these new pieces. The originally sung notes, scales, harmonic content and timbre of the recordings have been built upon using a variety of synthesisers and sequencers.

The process was made considerably easier due to the original vocals being performed in perfect pitch.

The process of editing these vocal recordings triggered multiple memories, which in turn informed directions for my work.

“Before” contains a (pre-lockdown) field recording of shoppers in Kensington Gardens, Brighton.

For “Hunter’s Moon” A distant voice calling from the past, improvised synth phrases based on the notes from the vocal recording.

“Lowtide”; a slow back and forth, giving rise to a short melody.

“A Walk on The New Way”; memories of childhood walks on summer days.

“Rhizomes”; a vocal collage, giving way to layered synths arpeggios.

“End Titles” a theme for an imaginary movie.
