With no 'real' instruments with which to join in the diep~haven Thee Bald Knobbers / Thee Hairee Kuntz parade from Newhaven Port to Newhaven Fort, a portable battery-powered feedback system was put together, comprising a tape player, a monotron delay, and a small speaker. By tweaking the filter and moving the speaker, a range of wails, squeaks, buzzes and hums could be produced.
The tape system fed back as it recorded, and recorded as it fed back. The intention was not to document the event, but nevertheless the event was documented, through the lens of a small, overloaded microphone and saturated cassette tape, carried by only one member within the large performing group.
A 90 minute parade / performance / ritual was thereby narrowed down to 45 minutes of tape-crunched material. This was then reduced down further to 20 minutes and 3 pieces. The results are an impressionistic take on one perspective of a multi-faceted event.
Recorded in Newhaven, July 2015, with Thee Bald Knobbers & Thee Hairree Kuntz, as part of diep~haven's Festival Transmache d’Art Contemporain program. Edited 2019-2020.
